Hooks
Crochet hooks are one-handed and come in many different sizes and materials.
It is important to pay attention to hook size and yarn compatibility when following patterns. Too big of a hook and your stitches will be very open and loose; too small and it will be very tight and stiff.

Yarn
There are many different types of yarn with varying textures and colors. As a beginner, avoid what we call “gimmick yarn”. These are yarns that are not the typical shape of basic string or plied yarn and can be very difficult to work with even for an expert.
Stitch Markers & Tapestry Needles
These items are extremely important in the crochet process. Crochet takes time and you will most likely not be able to finish a single project without having to put it down and come back to it later. For beginners, it can also be helpful to mark the beginning of a row to get the hang of counting stitches and rows.
The tapestry needle is for weaving in tails and sewing seams together. A regular sewing needle will not work for this because A) its sharp, ouch; and B) it will most likely get stuck in the yarn and split it rather than going in between.
Blocking Board
These are very helpful if you plan on making clothes and wearables. They help to uncurl the edges of your pieces and stretch them somewhat so you can make sure your pieces are also even.
Accessories
The above items are really the only thing you need to crochet. The following items are either for those of us with disabilities and mobility issues or just for convenience or aesthetic.
Yarn Bowls
These are bowls specifically for holding your yarn for you. They have holes or slits in the side for working yarn to come through so you don’t have to unravel it as you are working.

Tension Rings
These can be extremely helpful if you have arthritis or other issues that make it difficult or painful to move your fingers and hands. They are simple rings that hold your working yarn for you rather than wrapping it around your finger. For non-disabled folk, don’t let the convenience of these rings fool you. Relying on a tension ring will not help you learn and will most likely hinder you in the long run.
